The Bulgarian Glaucoma Society (BGS) is a professional, ethical, non-governmental organization of ophthalmologists with an interest in glaucoma.
Founded and registered in 2004.
Member of the World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and with membership in the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).
Main objectives:
- to assist in improving the early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of glaucoma;
- to contribute to the theoretical and clinical improvement of Bulgarian ophthalmologists in the field of glaucoma;
- to raise awareness among the public, health and competent state government bodies about the social significance of the disease, which is one of the leading causes of blindness, and to unite efforts to implement an effective national program to combat it;
- to support and stimulate young specialists in improving their professional skills and scientific achievements in our country and abroad.
To achieve its goals, BGD:
- Organizes symposia, seminars and information campaigns for ophthalmologists in connection with the early diagnosis and treatment of glaucoma;
- Publishes and distributes educational literature for ophthalmologists and patients;
- Assists and actively participates in glaucoma days and weeks held worldwide at the suggestion of the World Glaucoma Association and the World Patients Association, designed to inform the public, health and government authorities about the social significance of the disease and introduce measures to more successfully combat it. Assists in organizing free examinations, talks, publications and media appearances during these days.
- Creates a magazine of the association and a website.
- Cooperates with the World Glaucoma Association, Glaucoma Patients Association and other organizations.
- Provides grants.
- Sponsors participation of ophthalmologists in international scientific quorums.
